Pigeon Food-The importance of sugar for Racing Pigeons
Racing Pigeons require a strong physical stamina in order to maintain and ideally win the races they are engaged in. While protein based products are good from strength the real power is in complex sugars derived from carbohydrates. In this article I discuss in my humble opinion the grandiose of all pigeon food and that is the importance of sugar for racing pigeons.
For pigeons that race their bodies could be compared to a stove. In order to produce maximum input you will need to input fire wood. For pigeons the firewood is carbohydrates that kindle the fire in the stove producing the optimum burn. Carbohydrates turn or act as sugars and burn as Monosacharides. Now for those not familiar with the term Mono-sacharides are the simplest of carbohydrates and they provide the most direct fuel for muscle activity.
Another sugar that derives from the starch family of carbohydrates is Polysaccharides. They can be found in your grains, corn, barley and wheat. There purpose is for sustainability for pigeons during long race bouts. When these two sugars and others that I did not mention combine they all form together and are known as Glycogen.
The significance of the sugars are not only important before the race but after. Due to the demands of racing your pigeon will burn through the Glycogen and will need to replenish to keep his stove running at maximum output.
I am only touching the surface on the importance of complex sugars and their wonders. For more information on pigeon food and racing pigeons check out this Risk Free Resource .
